Abstract

Children with Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) face challenges across multiple domains, including academic performance, behavior, and social adjustment. Understanding the condition of children with IDD cannot be based solely on intelligence quotient scores but requires a comprehensive psychological assessment that considers adaptive functioning. This study aims to describe the process and outcomes of psychological assessment in a student with IDD attending a special education school, as a basis for understanding the child’s individual needs. This study used a descriptive case study design and a qualitative approach. A variety of techniques, including direct observation, parent and teacher interviews, and standardized psychological testing, were used to conduct the psychological evaluation in May 2025. Cognitive ability, behavioral patterns, social-emotional functioning, communication, and adaptive functioning were the main areas of assessment utilizing the Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale and the Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS). The results showed significant deficiencies in conceptual, social, and practical intellectual and adaptive functioning. However, the student demonstrated developing qualities in self-care and fundamental academic competencies. These findings highlight how important thorough psychological testing is in helping to create an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) that is specific to the needs of adolescents with intellectual developmental disorders.
