The Effect of Audio-Visual Health Education on Mothers’ Knowledge About Immunization for Toddlers

Abstract

Background: Immunization is an effort to increase a person’s immunity against various diseases. In practice, immunization is carried out by administering vaccines, which can be given through injections or orally. Health education is important to improve mothers’ knowledge regarding complete basic immunization for toddlers. Knowledge is a set of tools used to seek, discover, and enhance understanding of a problem by applying concepts and theories.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of health education using audiovisual media on improving mothers’ knowledge about complete basic immunization for toddlers at Posyandu Mawar Putih, Air Terbit Tapung.

Methods:  This study employed a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental approach using a pre-test and post-test without a control group. The research was conducted from January to December 2025 at Posyandu Mawar Putih. The sample consisted of 86 mothers who had toddlers, selected using random sampling techniques. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

Results: The results showed that the level of mothers’ knowledge before receiving health education through audiovisual media was in the good category at 78.1%, and increased to 86% after the intervention. Statistical test results indicated that there was a significant effect of audiovisual health education on improving mothers’ knowledge about complete basic immunization (p-value = 0.000).

Conclusion: Health education using audiovisual media has a significant effect on improving mothers’ knowledge about complete basic immunization for toddlers. This media can be used as an alternative and effective method of health education in community health services.
