Background : Diarrhea is still a big problem for human health in the world, especially in developing
countries. Food and drinks contaminated by microorganisms are a risk factor for causing diarrhea such
as Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. Binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia) have roots, tubers, stems,
flowers and leaves which contain active compounds, namely flavonoids, alkanoids, terpenoids and
saponins. Flavonoid active compounds have a direct role as antibiotics, by interfering with the function of
microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. Objective : To compare the inhibitory power of binahong
leaf extract (Anredera cordifolia) and antibiotics against isolates of E. coli bacteria. Methods : This
research has succeeded in showing the potential of binahong leaves as an antibacterial against E. coli
bacteria. The experimental method used, namely the Kirby-Bauer diffusion method, is a method
commonly used in antibacterial activity tests. The research results also show that there is a relationship
between the concentration of binahong leaf extract and the diameter of the inhibition zone, where the
higher the concentration, the larger the inhibition zone. The results : Shows that the average extra
inhibitory diameter of binahong leaves with concentrations of 50%, 40%, 30%, against E. coli is 7.23
mm; 4.55mm; 3.67 mm, while a concentration of 20% has no inhibitory power. On the antibiotic disk
Sulphamethoxazole, Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime, Ampicilin, Amoxcillin, an average resistance of 28.15 mm
was obtained; 29.72mm; 30.47mm; 16.00mm;19.00mm. From the research results, the best inhibition
zone produced by binahong leaf extract against E. coli bacteria is at a concentration of 50%.Conclusion :
The results of this research give hope that binahong leaves can be an alternative treatment for bacterial
infections, especially those caused by E. coli. However, it is important to remember that the use of
medicinal plants must be done carefully and based on the recommendations of health professionals.
Suggestion : It is not recommended to consume binahong leaf extract without medical supervision,
especially for children and pregnant women
