There is a multidirectional relationship between mental health conditions and socio-demographic variables
such as age, gender, education, household size and residence, employment, and income. To determine the
relationship between education level and parental income and children's mental health in 118 middle and
high school students (SMP and SMA) in Bukittinggi City aged 15 - 18 years. It was a cross-sectional study.
Research data was obtained by direct interviews using a questionnaire with a Likert type scale. Less than
half of the subjects had an income of 1-2 million (28.0%), had a father and mother each with a high school
education (44.9% and 43.2%). Less than half of the subjects had fathers who were entrepreneurs (32.2%)
and more than half of the subjects had housewives (61.0%). The majority of subjects had mental health
disorders, namely 89.0%. From the Fisher's exact test, there was no relationship between education and
parental income on mental disorders of high school students in Bukittinggi City (p>0.05). The prevalence
of mental disorders in adolescents is very high. Although there may be other factors that influence mental
health in adolescents, the problem of low levels of education and parental income still plays an important
role.
