Abstract

ABSTRACT

Labor is an important phase that requires adequate physical readiness and energy, particularly to support uterine contraction strength and the progress of the first stage of labor. One non-pharmacological effort to increase energy and improve contraction effectiveness is the consumption of dates before labor. Dates contain simple carbohydrates that are easily absorbed by the body, making them a quick source of energy for delivering mothers. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of date fruit consumption before labor on contraction strength and the duration of the first stage of labor. This study used a pre-experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The population consisted of 18 delivering mothers, and the sampling technique used was total sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The intervention was conducted by providing dates before labor. Data analysis was carried out using univariate and bivariate analysis with the paired sample t-test.The results showed that the mean duration and contraction strength in the control group were 1.67, while in the intervention group it was 1.00. Based on statistical test results, there was a significant effectiveness of date consumption on contraction strength and duration of the first stage of labor with a p-value of 0.004 (< 0.05). In conclusion, date consumption is effective in improving contraction strength and reducing the duration of the first stage of labor. It is recommended that health workers provide date consumption as a natural alternative to stimulate contraction strength and duration in delivering mothers.
